Do I Matter?

Tristan Comba

From the moment you step into Thrive on any given day, you're enveloped in an atmosphere that's buzzing with enthusiasm and the vibrant spirit of community. Looking out the lobby window, to the right, coach Marcus is leading his class through the ninja creed. Glancing up, coach Ryann is ending her pre-k class with free time on the trampolines. Over on the black floor, coach Camryn is working line tumbling with the level 2 team. Meanwhile, the left side of the gym is filled with three grade school classes, and our Developmental and Xcel teams are perfecting high level skills.

On any given week night, close to 300 children come into the gym ready to learn. This would not be possible without our staff of coaches who have found their niche within Thrive. Although all Thrive coaches are universally trained or working toward it, we have all found our sweet spot in the gym.

For example, when I was hired at 16-years-old, I went into the job thinking I would work my way up to coaching the higher level teams. I quickly realized that was not my path. I fell in love with coaching recreational classes and bringing an hour of joy to so many kids every week. Leah on the other hand, fulfills her purpose coaching competitive gymnastics. After being given the opportunity to coach pre-team, she found passion in the structure of practices and now helps level 6, 7, and 8 athletes reach their goals. Leah and I both grew up competing gymnastics with the same coaches, yet when becoming a coach ourselves, we fell into our places at Thrive on opposite sides of the gym. What unifies us as a cohesive group of coaches is, no matter where we find our niche in the gym, we are united under the common goal of instilling in each person we work with the knowledge that they matter.

Some coaches handle the big feelings of a tumbling toddler with unflustered grace. Some radiate hospitality from behind the front desk to those entering the facility. At Thrive, you’ll find that every employee contributes to the culture and vision.

Even though many Thrive coaches have the flexibility to go where they are needed throughout our programs, we celebrate the strengths we each possess and the roles that excite us, weaving us together so we can thrive. Employees recognize and appreciate each other's strengths, and know that the staff member working at the desk, the coach calming a child, the gym owner teaching parent-child classes, come together to create a whole that is impactful and powerful. Whether employee, team member, student, or parent, here’s the answer: yes! You matter.
